NASA & SpaceX, prefect together! (Plus a thank you!)

NASA & SpaceX have announced the next phase in their partnership. SpaceX’s contract with NASA is for 12 missions to the ISS and on October 7 is the scheduled launch date for their first resupply mission. Celebrate with me as we now have regained the ability to handle this ourselves and no longer must rely on Russia to meet our needs for the ISS (the cost savings of what we were being charged One million per person vs. one million for the entire trip represents a savings of up to seven million!)

This mission brings supplies such as materials to support 166 experiments in everything from the effects of microgravity to plant biology to needs for the robotic arm (you may recall they had to rig up something when last they repaired it.) The Dragon (SpaceX’s spacecraft for this mission) will connect to the ISS for several weeks before returning to Earth.

In late October the Dragon is expected back with a parachute assisted landing in the Pacific Ocean with several experiment samples and other cargo being returned.

If you are interested in the launch, it is Oct 7th at 8:34pm (at last one I don’t have to set my alarm for!) with a rain date being Oct 8th.

ON A PERSONAL NOTE: TO ALL THOSE I MET AT THE ROC-CON IN ROCHESTER THIS PAST WEEKEND. IT WAS A TREMENDOUS PLEASURE TALKING WITH YOU ON SO MANY THINGS. WHILE I WOULD LOVE EVERYONE TO READ MY BOOK, I COMPLETELY ENJOYED TALKING ABOUT ALL OF THE COOL THINGS NASA IS DOING OR DIFFERENT THOERIES ABOUT SPACE…SO MUCH FUN!...IF ANYBODY IS COMING TO ROC-CON PA OR TO PHILCON IN NOVEMBER I HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE OR IN THE MANY OTHERS TO FOLLOW – LET YOU KNOW WHERE.
